Canon’s RF 20-50mm F4 L IS USM PZ is not pretending to be a traditional stills-first zoom. Introduced alongside the EOS R6 V, it is clearly aimed at hybrid shooters and video users who benefit from smooth, controllable zoom moves. But the interesting part for photographers is Canon’s attempt to make a power zoom lens less annoying when you are shooting stills.
The key is a switch that lets the lens move between power zoom control and a more familiar ring-based zoom mode. Instead of relying only on a rocker-style control, photographers can rotate a ring on the lens barrel between two fixed points, which makes the lens behave more like a conventional zoom in hand.
The important catch: it is not mechanicalThat familiar feel only goes so far. DPReview’s hands-on report notes that the manual zoom mode is still controlled by the lens’s power zoom motors. Turning the ring does not physically move the lens elements in the direct, mechanical way photographers may expect. There is a slight delay between rotating the ring and the lens reaching the selected focal length.
That delay appears minor for small zoom adjustments, but it becomes more obvious when moving across the full 20mm to 50mm range. DPReview also found that the ring turns a little too easily, which can lead to accidental focal length changes and makes the experience feel less like direct physical control and more like remote-controlling the zoom motor.
Why it may still work better than most power zoomsThe larger point is that Canon’s approach may be a useful compromise. Traditional power zoom lenses can feel clumsy for still photography when they depend on a rocker or small on-lens control. Canon’s ring-based mode does not fully recreate a mechanical zoom, but it gives photographers a more natural interface than the usual power zoom setup.
There are also some practical benefits. DPReview says the lens retains its focal length setting when the camera body is turned off, as long as the zoom ring is not moved. That means it does not behave like a compact camera that has to travel back through its zoom range every time it powers on. If the ring is moved while the camera is off, however, the lens needs a moment to motor to the new focal length when the camera comes back on, and live view is unavailable during that brief adjustment.
The 20-50mm range is another part of the tradeoff. It does not reach the more common 24-70mm-style telephoto end, but DPReview found the range enjoyable for shooting photos, especially with the ability to go wider than 24mm while still ending at 50mm. The article frames that 50mm endpoint as acceptable if it helps keep the lens smaller.
The bigger picture for hybrid camerasFor photographers, the RF 20-50mm F4 L IS USM PZ looks less like a revolution and more like a sign of where hybrid camera gear is headed. Video-focused features are increasingly moving into lenses that still need to feel usable for stills. Canon’s answer here is not to hide the power zoom system, but to give photographers a control method that is closer to what they already know.
That matters because the success of hybrid gear often depends on friction. A lens can have excellent video behavior, but if it constantly irritates stills shooters, it becomes a specialty tool rather than an everyday option. Based on DPReview’s early shooting experience, Canon has not made a power zoom feel exactly like a mechanical zoom, but it may have made one that photographers can stop thinking about after a while. For a power zoom lens, that is meaningful progress.
For video users, the case appears more straightforward. The lens includes a W-T control that is not simply an on-off toggle: pushing it lightly moves through the range slowly, while pushing farther increases the zoom speed. On a camera with a dedicated zoom toggle, that kind of control is the whole point. For stills shooters, the question is whether the ring mode is good enough to make the video-first design feel normal in everyday use.
